News: Jack retires after sixteen years at the helm of Muckamore Credit Union Ltd.

Wednesday 20th February 2008 was a very special date in the calendar for Muckamore Credit Union Ltd. who held their Annual General Meeting on that evening at Muckamore War Memorial Orange Hall. The meeting was of special significance because Chairman Jack McClay stood down after sixteen years of sterling service. Jack has been in the chair at Muckamore since the inception of the Credit Union in 1991 and has steered the organisation through its infancy to the well respected Credit Union enjoyed by many patrons in and around the Muckamore area and beyond.

To honour Jack on the evening of his retirement the hall was packed with a good turnout of Councillors from Antrim Borough Council who of course are former colleagues of Jack's from his period of service on Antrim Borough Council. The Ulster Federation of Credit Unions were represented by Mr David Dowey, Chairman of the Federation and Gladys and Richard Copeland. From the County Antrim Zone came Robin Andrews who is the zone representative on the Federation. The First Trust Bank were represented by local Manager Mr. Ronnie Morton, Miss Ann Weir was there on behalf of the Credit Unions solicitors, O'Rorke, McDonald and Tweed and Mr. David Knox presented the accounts on behalf of the Credit Unions auditors Johnston Graham Ltd.

On retiring from the chair Jack recounted all the changes the Credit Union had gone through at Muckamore under his leadership. He told of how we started out in a dimly lit, draughty hall recording every transaction in a ledger and calculating balances with pen and paper, and he went on to outline all the changes that had taken place to bring the premises up to the modern suite of offices we have today with all the latest hi-tech equipment.

Jack said although he was retiring from the chair he would still be active at Muckamore helping out where and when he could. But he felt it was time to hand the reins over to someone else to take the Credit Union forward another step.

The new Chairman is William Carnwath who on taking the Chair presented Jack with an oil painting on behalf of the Credit Union. He then went on to pay tribute to Jack and praised him not only for the work he had carried out at Muckamore Credit Union Ltd, but also for his work with the Boys Brigade, the Loyal Orders and his involvement with Greystone Road Presbyterian Church where Jack is a Ruling Elder. William said Jack had given a lifetime of service not only to the Community in Antrim but also in his native Londonderry.  For some time, Jack served as a Councillor on Antrim Borough Council, and worked for many years in an advisory capacity through the local DUP offices. This was well illustrated and celebrated by the large attendance of local Councillors attending and paying tribute at Jacks retirement evening.

William said he is proud to be elected Chairman of the Credit Union and promises he will strive hard to promote the good name and qualities of Muckamore Credit Union Ltd.  and he says if he can enjoy half the success  his predecessor achieved then he will consider he has done a good job.

William says, we at Muckamore like to promote ourselves as a friendly, helpful, community based organisation and anyone wishing to join Muckamore Credit Union or know more about us can call during our opening hours 6.00pm to 7.30pm every Friday evening at Muckamore Orange Hall or phone on 94429435. Our objects are to promote thrift among our members by the accumulation of savings, creation of sources of credit for the benefit of members at a fair and reasonable rate of interest, the use and control of members savings for their mutual benefit and advising and educating members in the wise use of money and in the management of their financial affairs. Although we are community based and friendly we can give assurance of confidentiality in any dealings. We are always delighted to accept new members, who can fill the requirements of our 'common bond,' so why not give us a call? In conclusion William says he would like to quote Jack McClays 'motto' , "save regularly, borrow wisely and pay back promptly."
